Ttunu House
One of Lamu’s loveliest houses – a traditional mansion of great space and charm – peacefully situated in the heart of Old Lamu, with five double bedrooms and a large and pretty walled garden.
Ttunu is a really lovely and characterful house – its English owner, an accomplished interior designer, has restored, decorated and furnished it with great taste and style. All the walls are finished in a very attractive honey-coloured niru plaster, with an antique ‘stippled’ effect throughout. Originally dating back to the early 1800s, Ttunu was completely renovated and extended five years ago, and guests always comment on its very special, peaceful atmosphere and wonderful ‘vibes’.
Ttunu’s spacious ground floor galleries, which include entrance hall, courtyard, kitchen, reception galleries and double bedroom and bathroom, have particularly high ceilings and lovely turquoise-painted cross beams. They look out onto the large and private walled garden which was newly landscaped and planted in 2008 – with palm trees, red and white hibiscus and white frangipani – to name just a few of the plants, shrubs and flowers. A raised pergola terrace covered in pink and white bougainvillea, with expansive baraza seating is a nice, quiet and shady place to dine or to relax.
On the first floor is an airy dining terrace overlooking the garden, and a secluded courtyard living area with baraza bench seats – a perfect space for entertaining and stargazing. Adjoining the courtyard are a charming, intimate sitting room, and two double bedrooms, both with en-suite bathrooms.
On the second floor is the master bedroom – large and l-shaped with a spacious en-suite bathroom. It is quietly situated to the rear of the house, looking out over Ttunu’s and other neighbouring gardens. Running the entire length of the front of the house is a generous terrace – partly covered with a bougainvillea and jasmine-clad pergola, and partly makuti-thatched. Outside the second bedroom (again with ensuite bathroom) is a nice, private seating area with large inbuilt baraza sofa.
The third floor makuti-thatched roof terrace is a lovely place to relax and enjoy panoramic views across Lamu’s rooftops and gardens to the Lamu Channel and Manda Island.
Ttunu means precious gift in Kiswahili – an appropriate name for a real treasure of a house.
